Honoring the Vietnam Veterans of Chapter 1140, Franklin Tennessee and Beyond

Walking the grounds of the recent fundraising car show presented by the Music City Antique Auto Club of America, it was easy to get lost in the rows of gleaming vintage cars, chrome, and meticulously restored engines. But what truly stayed with me after I left wasn't just the machinery—it was the time I spent talking with the members of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1140, Franklin Tennessee, whose cause the event proudly benefited.
In every conversation, there was a profound sense of resilience, quiet dignity, and a lifelong brotherhood forged in an era unlike any other.
The Vietnam War was a profoundly difficult and politically complicated conflict. It put soldiers in impossible positions, and like any war, it involved actions and choices that should never have happened. But as I listened to these men, it became clear that we can—and must—acknowledge those harsh complexities without shifting the burden onto the individuals who served. They went where they were sent, carried out orders under brutal conditions, and too often came home to a fractured, indifferent populace that unfairly conflated the politics of the war with the soldiers wearing the uniform. And for far too many, the journey ended overseas—leaving behind loved ones that spent decades wondering what futures were stolen in a war that deeply divided a nation.
Talking with the members of VVA Chapter 1140 reveals something grounded and real: today, Chapter 1140 continues its enduring brotherhood, standing ready to help their fellow veterans in need—bearing witness to a nation that slowly learned the heavy cost of its past mistakes, realizing at last that the soldiers who wore the uniform deserved our gratitude, not our division.
To the members of VVA Chapter 1140, and to the entire community that stands beside them—from the Music City AACA and the Independence High School JROTC Cadets to the Elks Lodge # 72 - Franklin, the local car community, and all who give their support—thank you. Your dedication and your unwavering care for one another show us what true community really means.
In that spirit, and with profound respect for those who served, the Geveden Charitable Fund deeply appreciates the opportunity to provide a grant to support the impact of this community effort.
