Little People of America (LPA) observes October as Dwarfism Awareness Month, a time to promote understanding, share information and break down stereotypes. While dwarfism is marked by shorter stature, it is vital to see that those affected are just like everyone else in almost every respect. At the core of our existence, we all share fundamental human experiences—love, joy, sorrow, and the desire for connection.

Understanding Dwarfism

Dwarfism, also known as skeletal dysplasia, is a medical condition that results in a significantly shorter stature. An adult height of 4 feet 10 inches or shorter typically defines it. There are over 200 types of dwarfism, the most common being achondroplasia, affecting approximately 70% of those with the condition. Despite physical differences, individuals with dwarfism lead fulfilling lives, pursuing careers, engaging in hobbies, and forming meaningful relationships, just like anyone else. For example, many work in various fields, including education, sports, and the arts.

The Joy of Connection

One of the greatest joys in my own family comes from our relationship with a wonderful four-year-old boy named Finn, who happens to have dwarfism. This condition does not define him; rather, it adds to the rich tapestry of his personality. Whether we are engaged in playing games or watching his favorite TV show, Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley, where he eagerly awaits the familiar trumpet and introduction, every moment spent together is filled with joy.

Finn's journey is greatly supported by his parents, Clint and Claire, who play a pivotal role in nurturing his spirit and confidence. Moreover, Clint and Claire embody the essence of advocacy and education. In fact, Claire raised over $4,000 through a fundraiser for LPA in honor of Dwarfism Awareness Month. They are dedicated to ensuring that Finn has access to resources and opportunities that promote his development and inclusion. Their commitment to raising awareness about dwarfism not only benefits Finn but also helps to cultivate a more understanding and accepting community around him.

It is safe to say that the lessons I learn from this great family extend far beyond our friendship; they resonate in what is important in life. Each day with Finn is not just about the joy of companionship but also about celebrating the incredible diversity of life and the profound connections that can arise from it.

Embracing Our Shared Journey

In honor of Dwarfism Awareness Month, we are thankful for the chance to support LPA via the Geveden Charitable Fund. I urge everyone to explore the resources at LPA and, when possible, welcome individuals with dwarfism into your life. Their joy, affection, and companionship can illuminate your world in unexpected ways.
